[Instructions]

[Final Project]

For our final project, we were required to create a 1 minute video of special effects (VFX) OR stop motion animation (animation students only) in pairs.

Group Members:
1. Jesslyn Octavia Tjong (0374562)
2. Kimberly Miaw Jya Nee (0366836)

Process Work

In class, Mr Martin let us pick a card from a tarot card deck to decide our topic. The card we got was The Star, upright. We had to base our storyline around the main theme, Fear.

Research

Shooting

We did the video shooting on two separate days.

11/7/25 (Week 12): Shot indoor scenes
18/7/25 (Week 13): Shot outdoor scenes (Location #1, #2, #3)

Task Distribution
Actor: Kimberly
Videographer: Jesslyn
Editor(s): Jesslyn, Kimberly

VFX Editing

For the editing process, Jess handled the beginning part of the video, while I was responsible for the ending section and compiling all the final files.

Jess's VSP Final Project Blog:

VFX Used:

1. Teleportation
2. Floating Polaroid
3. Morphing

Premiere Pro Effects Used:

1. Intro Zoom-in Effect
2. Whip Pan Transition

Location #2 Scene

My part of the video begins after the scene where the girl falls into a portal in her house. She lands at Location #1: her favourite restaurant. In this scene, I added a zoom-in effect right at the beginning.

Next, I used a morphing VFX to quickly transition from her full bowl of noodles to an empty one.

Fig. 4. Editing Morphing VFX in After Effects

Even though the tutorial was straightforward, I ended up spending the most time fine-tuning the mask between the full and empty bowl scenes to make the transition smoother.

Fig. 5. Editing Morphing VFX in After Effects

In this scene, the Polaroid she was chasing also appeared in frame. I used the Polaroid Freeze VFX to create this effect.

For Location #2 and Location #3, I mainly trimmed the clips and arranged them in Premiere Pro.

Compilation & Sound Effects

Once Jess finished editing her part, I combined both of our videos in Premiere Pro and trimmed any extra clips. I also added additional sound effects to her section and adjusted the volume levels for both the sound effects and background music to make sure everything blends smoothly.

[Reflection]

Experience

Overall, this project was quite fun. I enjoyed learning new editing tools in Premiere Pro and exploring special effects in After Effects (though my laptop was burning up like a grill). VFX editing was definitely the trickiest part, and it took us the longest to get used to. I'm really glad I teamed up with Jess for this project. We were a bit stuck during the brainstorming stage, but I’m proud that we managed to make it work in the end.

Observation

We noticed that even simple storylines can become more engaging with the right editing and effects. The creative process took more time than expected, especially when figuring out how to visually bring our ideas to life. Small things like transitions, masking, and timing really changed the overall flow and feeling of the video.

Findings

Good editing can turn almost any footage into something impactful. When used thoughtfully, effects and transitions can enhance the story and hold the viewer’s attention. This project taught us that strong visuals often come down to planning, patience, and experimenting with different techniques.
