[Practical]

This week, we only had to create our e-portfolio blog for DPI and list down our 3 favourite graphic design composition work from Pinterest.

Design #1: Ukatama Magazine Cover by Mika Hirasa (MICAO)

Description:

This artwork is made by Mika Hirasa (MICAO), a Japanese freelance artist who specialises in embroidery and children’s picture books. This is one of the magazine covers she designed for Ukatama, a healthy lifestyle magazine that focuses on food.

This Magazine Cover expressed :

  • Characters are on an adventure on the top of a hill.

  • Utilised collages of real food and embroidery works to create a distinctive artwork.

  • Embroidered background adds texture, while the cookies added some dimension.

  • Evoked a slightly playful, cozy, handmade feel to the artwork which complements the genre of magazine, welcoming readers to take a look.

Overall, I find Mika Hirasa’s work truly inspiring and creative although most of her works are done decades ago. I personally love timeless designs that are also unique in their own way.

Design #2: Beabadoobee’ Beatopia Poster by Claire Boon (@phrawgcraft)

Description:

This poster is designed by Claire Boon (@phrawgcraft on Instagram), a graphic designer based in Singapore. She designs posters for music artists as her personal projects and shares them on social media.

This Poster expressed :

  • A poster based on Beabadoobee’s 2022 album, Beatopia.

  • Composition is mainly low contrast, which is what makes the elements blend together seamlessly.

  • Incorporated a hint of cyber sigilism in her design, along with the texts, shapes and colours.

I usually find myself gravitating towards more simple and minimal designs but I came across her detailed work one day and I’m left  in awe of how she managed to create a maximalist composition that is visually cohesive.

Design #3: Book Cover by Elisha Zepeda

https://www.elishazepeda.com/books

Description:

This book cover is designed by Elisha Zepeda, a book cover artist with Penguin.I find his book cover designs innovative and creative. He knows exactly how to design a cover according to each book which I find fascinating because you need to understand the context of the book in order to create a suitable design that will speak for itself. A good book cover can give readers an idea of the theme of the book and stand out on the bookshelf.

This Book Cover expressed:

  • A book cover for “The Plot Against Native America” by Bill Vaugh.
  • Used red as the contrasting colour which brings attention to the title.
  • Used a black and white cutout of a group photo, to show the book is about the story behind Native American boarding school students.
  • Each person’s face is covered by a red dot to give readers a sense of uncertainty and mystery to the book, wanting to find out more.

Thank You
